American Curl Cats

The American Curl is a breed that is characterized by its very soft and thick fur coat, and the special curl ears that take a reversed “C” curve towards the center of the head. In some types, the ears curl backwards from the face to the center of the back part of skull. However, the kittens are born with straight normal looking ears that begin to curl within 10 days until the fourth month.

The ears of American Curl cats are very sensitive and need a delicate handling for the rough handling may damage the tissues or break the ear cartilage.

American curl cats look so cute and a bit like the Persian cats in appearance. They are available in different coat colors and some breeds show amazing thick, long and fluffy coats. They were first sighted in 1983 at the cat show, and from 1987 to 1993 they became quite known and loved as participating in champions. The breed is usually a medium sized one “from 5- 10 pounds only” and is fully matured by the age of 2 or 3 yrs.

The American Curl cats are usually strong breeds, with either short legs in thick fur cats, or longer legs in shorter coats. They may not suffer from any genetic problems other than the need for frequent cleaning for the ears and gentle handling. They are quiet breeds that enjoy staying with their owners and love them.
